Papenhuyzen suffers suspected broken kneecap in hammer blow to Storm’s title chances

Melbourne Storm star Ryan Papenhuyzen has suffered another serious injury setback after being carried off in the first half of their clash with Canberra at AAMI Park. There are fears he has suffered a suspected fractured patella.

If the worst fears are confirmed, it would likely mean the end of Papenhuyzen’s season and be a huge blow to third-placed Melbourne’s chances of competing for the premiership with runaway competition leaders Penrith.

The fullback went down in a heavy collision with Jack Wighton. The Raiders five-eighth had made a line break and almost ran straight over the top of Papenhuyzen as he went for a head-on legs tackle.

Wighton was felled, but Papenhuyzen struggled to get up in the aftermath. He appeared unable to put any weight on his knee and was eventually removed with the help of medical staff.

He has already missed significant time this year with a knee complaint after sustaining a PCL tear in Round 9, tearing his hamstring in the same incident.
